We had tons of fun and laughter in August when Iago and Adrian came to perform and teach children, with a few adults included, circus skills! Hula hoops, juggling plates and much more! Based outside the hall the two were busy all morning – thanks for their hard work.

It started with the three of us looking at the repositioned remembrance plaque from the demolished Cesarea chapel situated in the Canolfan Y Fron.  If so many had died in WW1 from Fron, how many from the Nantlle Valley quarries?  Were they all remembered?

Quarrymen had many skills useful during wartime, driving engines and other machinery, using explosives and, of course, quarrying to name a few. 

We decided there and then to do more to honour those men and so we started the Y Caban cake stall, primarily in Talysarn then the monthly Marchnad Lleu in the Neuadd Goffa, Penygroes as well as the afternoon teas at Canolfan Y Fron.  All monies taken go into the pot for the remembrance plaque.

We have now raised enough for the first part of our vision, the slate plaque with the written commemoration, next is a visual representation so we are continuing with our fundraising activities though we wanted to show and thank all those who have purchased cakes from us to date and show them the beautiful slate plaque which pays tribute to the 71 who fell during both World Wars from the Nantlle Valley.

Following a visit from DementiaActif Gwynedd at a recent Marchnad, the Committee decided to hold a Dementia Friendly training session. We came together, along with staff from Trigonos to learn about this dreadful illness and how we can help those suffering or going through a diagnosis. A very interesting course and our thanks go to Lia for her time.

Jonathan Garratt has a BSc (Hons) Environmental Science, Msc Rural Resource Management and a Permaculture Design Certificate.
He has had various work in conservation, the environment, agriculture and environmental consultancy.
He has grown up with honeybees, going out to manage the hives with his father as a child in Menai Bridge, Ynys Môn, and eventually taking on the full care of the hives. He has been a Seasonal Bee Inspector for the National Bee Unit for 22 years from 2001-2022. He has run countless courses in beekeeping for many years, either privately or through other organisations such as the National Botanic Gardens Wales, The Snowdonia Society, Bangor University, the Centre for Alternative Technology and the Woodland Skills Centre. Jonathan & his wife have a small business selling honey and beehive products. He has great enthusiasm and enjoys dealing with honeybees and other insects and passing on his skills to others.

We recycle paper, cardboard, plastics and metal in the Market. We now have a battery box, so don’t throw them in the rubbish bin – bring them along.

Following the success of last month’s seed and plant swap, it was decided to swap yarn and fabric this month. Several came with a bag of spare wool and fabric and then went home with another bag! A good chance to get rid of leftover stuff.

We were so proud of Anwen last week when she received an award from Mantell Gwynedd for all the volunteering work and work in the community she has done over many, many years. Anwen organises all the tasters sessions, the information and fundraiser stalls as well as being our secretary, it is a voluntary role. Here she is with her certificate which she received at a reception at Portmeirion.
